Snowy weather has put local teams behind

Posted by rob On April - 24 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

HARTINGTON — They say if you don’t like the weather in the Midwest, just wait an hour. Northeast Nebraska’s high school golfers and track athletes have had to wait a lot longer than that for their seasons to get into full swing.

In the midst of one of Northeast Nebraska’s coldest and wettest springs in recent memory, athletes and coaches at area schools  have had to deal not only with postponements and cancellations, but also with extremely limited outdoor practice time.

Cedar Catholic Golf Coach Mike Johnson has had to turn practices into duels and triangulars between players to put them in as many match situations as possible in the limited time the Trojans have had to practice outside.

Cedar girls start season at home

HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic girls basketball team will tip off the new season with a pair of home games Thursday and Friday.

Cedar will try to improve upon its 6-14 record of 2011 when the Lady Trojans host Crofton on Thursday and Boone Central/Newman Grove on Friday.

Crofton is now a full-fledged member of the MidStates Conference, so this weekend’s competition will mark the first of a long conference campaign for Cedar.

Coach Jason Folkers is hoping his team is able to get off to a faster start this season. Cedar dropped its first four games of the season last year, including a 67-46 setback at Crofton and a 65-37 loss to Boone Central.

HPS teams start against Ponca

HARTINGTON — The Hartington boys and girls basketball teams will tip off the new season with a pair of home games Thursday night.

The Wildcat boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will host Ponca Thursday. Ponca is co-oping with Newcastle this season.

Coach Josh Morten’s Lady Wildcats are hoping to improve upon last year’s 8-12 season record.

The Cats have opened against Ponca for the past several years. The Lady Indians earned a 43-34 win last year.

Coach Nick Haselhorst’s Wildcats are looking to best last year’s record 7-14 mark. Ponca defeated Hartington 55-24 last year in Haselhorst’s coaching debut.

Cedar boys to host Boone Friday

HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic boys basketball team will tip off the new season Friday at the Msgr. Werner Activity Center when they host MidStates Conference foe Boone Central/Newman Grove in a boy-girl double-header.

The Trojans started last year’s campaign off with a 48-41 win over the Cardinals in Albion. Boone Central went on to post a 13-11 season, while Cedar ended 2011 with a 20-5 record and a third-place finish at State.

The Trojans will then travel to Bloomfield on Tuesday to take on the Bees. The two teams have not met on the basketball court for several years.

Wrestlers open season at Scribner

HARTINGTON — The combined Cedar Catholic – Hartington wrestling team will open the season Thursday with a dual meet at Scribner-Snyder.

The local team will have to get used to going on the road this season as no home meets are on this year’s schedule.

The team will compete at the Creighton Invitational on Saturday.

HARTINGTON  With the final regular season football games of the season now upon us, it’s time to take a look at the Nebraska High School Football playoff projections.

The official pairings won’t be out until Saturday, but at this time, it appears that all five of Cedar County’s teams should make the playoffs- that’s assuming all five win their final regular-season games.
