Local athletes pick up All State Honorable Mention honors

OMAHA — Despite only playing a hand-full of games this season, Cedar Catholic’s Connor Wieseler was named to the Lincoln Journal Star’s First Team All State Team for Class C2 this season.

Wieseler was one of serveral area football players to pick up post-season honors last week.

Cedar Catholic football players collect All District honors

HARTINGTON — Four members of the Cedar Catholic football team earned First Team All District honors last week.

Four other players from the 5-5 Trojan team picked up All District Honorable Mention honors.

The Cedar team qualified for the state playoffs for the 21st time in school history and the 14th straight year.

Taylor Kathol,  Connor Wieseler, Ryan Becker, and  Grant Dickes all picked up All District First Team honors.

Cedar, HPS both fall in second-round action

HARTINGTON —  Cedar Catholic’s defense just couldn’t stop Ponca’s inside game Wednesday night.

The Indians dominated the line of scrimmage all night long to earn a 38-29 playoff victory here.

Ponca ended up rolling up 379 rushing yards in the contest. The Cedar run game only managed 92 yards on the night —a season low for Cedar.

Cedar blanks favored Louisville to set up playoff rematch with Ponca

LOUISVILLE — Cedar pitched a 28-0 shut-out to surprise heavily favored Lousiville here Thursday in first-round playoff action to advance to Wednesday’s second round game.

The Trojans, making their 14th straight trip to the playoffs, upped their post-season record during that span to 15-10.

Cedar used a stifling defense and a solid running attack to pick up the 28-0  victory and move to 5-4 on the year.

Cedar easily races past Wisner-Pilger

HARTINGTON  — Cedar  Catholic not only had to battle Wisner-Pilger Thursday night, but high winds and a driving rain, as well.

Despite the 35-45 mile an hour winds, which pushed a fierce sideways rain, the Trojans were able to top Wisner-Pilger 34-12.

The win evened Cedar’s season at 4-4 and put the Trojans back in the playoffs.

Cedar County teams headed to the playoffs

HARTINGTON — Four of Cedar County’s five high school football teams will enter post-season action this week.

The Hartington Wildcats are the only area team to earn home-field advantage in the first round. The Cats will host Pender Thursday.

The Cats finished the 2012 football season with a perfect 8-0 mark.  The Cats’ unbeaten mark allowed them to earn the second seed in the East Bracket in the Class D1 football playoffs.

Cedar falls against state-rated West Holt

ATKINSON — Cedar Catholic was charged with the task of trying to shut down one of the best runners in the state Friday.

Like nearly every other team that faced West Holt this year, the Trojans found out the task was a tough one, as senior running back Josh Coyle led the state-rated Huskies to a 35-7 win over the Trojans.

Cedar Catholic gets back to its winning ways

HARTINGTON — After two weeks against two of the best teams in the state, the Cedar Catholic Trojans  finally got back on the winning track here Friday.

Cedar handed Battle Creek a 26-0 setback during District football action to improve to 3-3 on the year.

Neither team was able to get much going in the first frame as the quarter ended in a 0-0 tie.

Cedar comes up short against Luth. NE

NORFOLK — The Cedar Catholic Trojans dominated the second half Friday against undefeated and second ranked Lutheran High NE.

The surge wasn’t enough to overcome 20-6 first-half deficit and pull off the upset win over the Eagles, who entered the game ranked second in the state in most Class C2 state polls.

Cedar rally falls short against Crofton

HARTINGTON  — Cedar Catholic put on a relentless second-half rally, but it wasn’t enough to earn the come-from-behind win against rival Crofton Friday.

The 28-21 loss drops Cedar to 2-2 on the season.

Cedar Catholic Coach Chad  Cattau said the Trojans looked better than they had the week before in a lopsided loss to Ponca, but they still have a lot of work to do.
