State Tourney Action

The Wynot Expos played two games in the S.D. Class B State Tournament. The Expos defeated Colman in a one-run marathon win last Wednesday, but fell in a tough one-run setback to Madison Sunday night. In Wednesday’s contest, Todd Pinkelman waits for the throw from Brett Wiebelhaus to put a Colman runner out. Matt Hames dives to the ground to make an out. The players had to endure a three-hour rain delay before they could finish Wednesday’s contest. Todd Pinkelman, Scott Heine, Scott Heimes and Lance Heine spent part of the delay talking in the rain outside of the dugout.

Eskens wins the Golden Arm award

Cooperstown, N.Y. — Andrew Eskens, Lincoln Rebels, Lincoln, took home the Golden Arm Award in the most recent  American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament held in Cooperstown, N.Y.

The tournament was held during the week of July 8. He beat out 103 other competitors from around the country to earn the award.

Seniors finish the year with Dist. Runner-up trophy

WISNER — For the third time in four years, Hartington and Pender squared off last week with a State Tournament berth on the line.
Hartington had to work its way through the loser’s bracket to gain a ticket to the title match. Pender breezed to the title game without suffering a single setback.
Hartington got off to  a good start against Pender, earning a 2-1 lead, thanks mainly to the bat of Keenan Sudbeck. Sudbeck belted a third inning triple to drive in a run. Ty Uhing’s infield hit that allowed Sudbeck to cross the plate.

Wynot opens State Tny. tonight

MITCHELL, S.D. — The Wynot Expos begin their bid Wednesday for a third South Dakota Amateur Baseball title.
The Expos, 17-9, will take on Colman at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Class B State Tny opener at Mitchell’s Cadwell Park.
Wynot rival and defending champion Crofton competes in its first tournament game on Friday at 1 p.m., taking on Garretson.
The field of 32 Class B teams will take part in a 12-day single elimination tournament to crown a state champion.

Hartington Seniors try for return trip to State

WISNER — The Hartington American Legion Seniors are trying to do something no other group of Hartington baseball players has ever acccomplished before — qualify for three straight state tournaments.
The local team entered Class C2 District baseball action last Friday as the third seed. Hartington earned a decisive 9-4 win over Battle Creek in the tourney opener.

Hartington Juniors top Randolph and Crofton

CREIGHTON — The Hartington American Legion Junior baseball team entered last week’s Area 1 District Tournament as the fifth seed.
Hartington and fourth seed Randolph squared off in first-round action last Tuesday with Hartington earning the 12-10 come-from-behind win.
Jared Wiebelhaus earned the win on the mound, while Brett Haisch suffered the loss for Randolph.

Wynot knocks off unbeaten Yankton Tappers

WYNOT — Wynot is beginning to come together as a team, knocking off the Yankton Tappers, 3-2 here Thursday.
Lee Heimes kept the Yankton offense at bay in seven innings of work on the mound.
Scott Heine lofted a homer out of the park to help give Wynot a 2-0 lead after four innings.
Yankton came back to knot the score at 2-2 with a big sixth-inning outburst.
The Expos went ahead in the seventh frame, pushing a run across the plate with the aid of an error.
Lee Heimes struck out four in the complete game win. Josh Engquist took the loss, also striking out four.
Wynot is now  7-5 in the South Central League.

It’s tournament time in Cedar County

HARTINGTON — The end of June and the start of July are busy times for area baseball teams.
The Cedar-Knox 9-10 year-olds held their annual tournament last weekend in Wynot.
Hartington will host the league tournament for the 11-12 teams this Saturday at the Hartington Community Complex.
Fordyce will enter the tournament as the top seed.

HARTINGTON — Hartington’s Carter Thoene takes a cut at the ball during a Pony League game here against Norfolk Wednesday. Casey Lammers makes a defensive play on a ball. Tanner Keiser slides safely into home. The 18-2 victory went to Norfolk.

American Legion teams fall to Wayne

HARTINGTON — Wayne earned a sweep of the action here last Thursday, defeating both the Hartington American Legion Juniors and Seniors.
The Wayne Junior Legion team came from behind to earn the 6-3 decision.
Wayne’s Curtis Moeller was the winning pitcher, going six innings, surrendering three runs on nine hits while striking out five.
