Local athletes compete in wrestling tournament

GRAND ISLAND — Noah Scott and Drew Loberg participated in the Nebraska USA State Wrestling Tournament in Grand Island this past weekend.

Scott participated in the 120lb 5th and 6th grade division.  He lost his first match to a Hastings opponent by a 9-1 score.  Scott then won his second round match over a North Bend opponent by pin in 27 seconds.  Scott then lost a last second 5-4 decision to a wrestler from Lincoln.  Scotts’ two losses were to the eventual third and fifth place wrestlers.

Dylan Loberg places fourth at State Wrestling

OMAHA — The Randolph Cardinals took four wrestlers to Omaha to compete in the State Wrestling Tournament. Shawn Thelen, Jesse Schmit, Dylan Loberg, and Tyler Brunssen all qualified and competed.

Dylan Loberg placed fourth in the 182 lb. bracket. He went 3-2 in the tournament losing his second round match and his third and fourth place match to the same opponent Kris Rasmussen, Amherst. Loberg defeated Wyatt Rowe, Hyannis, in the first round. He defeated Vade Jensen, Wilcox-Hildreth, in the second round consolations and Quinten Chancellor, Medicine Valley, to get into the medal round. Gerrit VanEngen forfeited to Loberg due to an injury allowing Loberg to face Rasmussen for third and fourth.

Randolph Cardinals win the Winside Wrestling Tournament

WINSIDE — The Randolph Cardinals wrestling team traveled to Winside Jan. 5 and competed in their annual pool tournament.  The Cardinals took first place as a team and medaled multiple wrestlers.

Shawn Thelen, Jesse Schmit, Dylan Loberg and Austin Gubbels, all took first place in their respective brackets.  Austin Korth and Tyler Brunssen both placed second at the tournament. James Oelrich placed third and Lane Bowers finished fourth to round out the placers.

Local wrestlers earn medals at Elgin

ELGIN — The Randolph Cardinals wrestling team went to Elgin Pope John on Saturday December 15th.  The team placed 5th overall out of 17 teams scoring 70 team points.  Individually, Randolph medaled six out of 10 wrestlers.

Tyler Brunssen was the top medal winner placing second in the 195-pound class.  Dylan Loberg, Austin Korth, Austin Gubbels, and Shawn Thelen all placed third in their respective classes.  Lane Bowers placed fourth in the 160-pound class.

CREIGHTON — Randolph went to Creighton Dec. 1, to participate in the Creighton-Verdigre Invitational.

Randolph had seven wrestlers compete in the all-day tournament.

Jesse Schmit wrestled at 113 lbs. and placed fourth.

RANDOLPH — Randolph went to Creighton Saturday to participate in the Creighton-Verdigre Invitational.

Randolph had seven wrestlers compete in the all-day tournament.

Jesse Schmit wrestled at 113 lbs and placed fourth. He lost to Wyatt Knievel of Neligh-Oakdale and Tyler Frederick of Battle Creek.  He defeated Ibriam Salinas of Norfolk.

Randolph freshman earns fifth at State

OMAHA — Randolph’s Dylan Loberg picked up a fifth place medal Saturday at the Class D state tournament.

Loberg went up against Coltin Brokaw in the wrestlebacks  Friday in the Class D 170-pound division.

Randolph’s freshman stand-out battled the 32-3 senior from Winside  to a scoreless first period.
Loberg stared the second period on the bottom, but Brokaw couldn’t keep him there as Loberg earned an escape and a takedown halfway through the second period.
Brokaw then got an escape of his onw with 45 seconds left in the period to make it 3-1 headed into the final frame.
Loberg started the final period on top with a 3-1 advantage, but he lost the lead just 20 seconds into the frame when Brokaw executed a reversal to knot the score up at 3-3. Browkaw then tried to earn back points to take the lead, but he was unable to maintain control and Loberg earned an escape with under 10 seconds left to earn the 4-3 decision and advance to the medal round  on Saturday.

Loberg heads to State Tourney

OAKLAND — Dylan Loberg took third place at the D-2 Districts to earn a trip to Omaha and compete at the State Tournament at 170 pounds.
Dylan beat Randy Kruse from Osmond in the quarterfinals to set up a match with Brett Ryan of Cedar Valley.
Dylan and Brett wrestled an exciting match that went to double overtime that Ryan won on a reversal late in that period.
Dylan then went on to beat JJ Oltmer of Humphrey St. Francis with a pin.  Dylan then beat Brandon Wragge of Howells in Overtime to pick up the third-place medal.

RHS wrestlers host meet with Ponca, LCC

RANDOLPH — The Randolph Cardinal Wrestling team hosted Parent’s Night Jan. 24 when they faced Ponca and Laurel/Concord/Coleridge.
Randolph started the triangular with a 30-21 win in a dual against Ponca, with Austin Korth posting an impressive win, pinning Sean Uhl, Ponca.
The second dual was against Laurel/Concord/Coleridge.  Randolph lost the dual 33-21.
Shawn Thelen, Austin Korth, Dylan Loberg and Tyler Loberg all picked up wins in the dual.
Thelen pinned Dakota Heitman.  Korth pinned Beau Wheeler.  Dylan beat Brett Haisch 6-1.
Tyler had an open weight class to get a win.  Laurel/Concord/Coleridge defeated Ponca in the other dual 48-6.

Randolph matmen compete at NENAC, Neligh

CREIGHTON — The Randolph wrestlers traveled Thursday to participate in the NENAC Conference Dual Tournament.
The tournament is seeded based on total wins by your team.  After the first round, the top four teams and the bottom four teams wrestle in a round-robin format.
Randolph was paired up with Neligh-Oakdale to start the tournament.  We then wrestled Laurel-CC, Creighton, and Elkhorn Valley in the bottom round-robin.
Randolph had seven wrestlers participate in the Duals.
