HARTINGTON — On the final day of the regular season, the Viking track squad was ready to do battle at the D-3 District Track meet in Hartington.

The kids were told in the days leading up to the district meet that all the work that they had put in when the weather was less than conducive, they would finish the season the way they wanted. As the day progressed, that theme became even stronger at the district meet. Several personal records were being shattered as each event was final and in the end, there were several Vikings that had hit their personal best. Seven athletes would qualify for the state meet and the Wausa girls track squad would capture their first district track championship in 27 years.

PONCA — On a sun-filled day and one of the most spectacular settings you will find at a track meet, the Wausa Lady Vikings finished runner-up at the 2013 Lewis and Clark Conference Track and Field meet at Ponca. The Lady Vikings finished with 83 points to conference champion Ponca with 87.5 points.

Just as the girls were battling for position, the Wausa boys made an outstanding mark of their own as they finished tied for fourth with Bloomfield with 53 points.

The athletes just had an outstanding day all the way around from top to bottom. What you will notice in the results is how many “Personal Records” and “Season Bests” that will be indicated.

WAUSA — Last Saturday may not have been the most conducive weather for a track meet, but when has it been? With that being said, I thought we really had a pretty good day. Our kids knuckled down and turned in some personal records and competed very well.

The Wausa girls scored 94 points to finish up in the runner-up spot with Hartington winning the event with 103 points.

On the boys side, Wausa finished fourth with 65 points with the Hartington boys winning the event with 152 points.

CREIGHTON — Well, take a jump back in time when there were only a handful of schools who had all weather surface facilities and dual track meets were a popular item. At least they were when I was in high school some 35 or 36 years ago.

The Wausa Boys and Girls track squads traveled to Creighton last Monday for a good old fashioned dual.

CREIGHTON — Last Tuesday the Viking Track Squads competed in the Knox County Invitational held at Creighton High School.

The Wausa Boys placed 6th in the 12 team event with 46 points and the Wausa Girls placed 3rd with 63 points. We had a pretty good day for our first outdoor meet.

We are still kind of in a fact finding mission as we are still trying to place kids in different events.

Overall we thought that our kids competed very hard and we had some good marks and several PR’s with our first outdoor meet.

Next week, the Vikings will travel to O’Neill for the O’Neill Invitational Thursday, April 11.

WAYNE — Last Friday, the Viking Track Squads opened the 2013 season indoor at the Wayne State Indoor. As usual, the weather outside was really conducive for an outdoor meet, but that is Nebraska where weather is about as predictable as politics!

For the first event of the season I thought we had a lot decent marks, but more importantly I was impressed with the way our kids competed. We had some young kids step in and compete well. Our next meet will be Tuesday, March 26 at Plainview for the Plainview Triangular with a start time of 3:30 p.m. Teams involved are Plainview, Osmond, and Wausa.

OMAHA — The Wausa Lady Vikings track squad came away with a 13th place finish at the state meet scoring 16 points and bringing home three medals from the Nebraska State Track and Field meet in Omaha last Friday and Saturday.
Junior Abbi Hegge had to come from behind on her last jump to capture a 3rd place finish in the Triple Jump with a mark of 34’-9 ¾”.

OMAHA — Wausa’s track athletes squared off against some of the best competition in the state here Thursday in the State Class D Track Meet.

HARTINGTON — Last Wednesday, the most perfect weather day of this track and field season, the Viking Track squads competed in the D-3 District Track and Field meet at the Hartington Sports Complex.
Our kids had solid performances across the board and several athletes finished with personal best on the last day and that is what its really all about. We told them during the week that districts is about making sure that you give your best effort and leave no doubt that you left it all on the track. From that point on, let the chips fall where they fall. As a result, many walked away knowing that they had given their best effort and we couldn’t be more pleased with this group on how they competed at districts and the way they had competed all season long.

WINSIDE — That’s right, you heard it!
The Wausa Boys and Girls Track squads won the Jim Winch-Winside invitational last Thursday at the Laurel Track and Field Complex.
The Wausa Boys scored 92 points followed by runner-up Allen with 77 and the Wausa Girls won another squeaker by defeating Homer 88-87 in team scoring.
Needless to say we had a phenomenal day! It may sound like a broken record, but we had several personal records and each of them played a significant part in the scoring for both squads.
