Bears compete at the Stanton Invitational

Stanton — Austin Roach earned gold to lead the Laurel-Concord/Coleridge wrestlers at Stanton Saturday.

Last year’s class “C” runner-up Madison, along with class “D” runner-up Pender and last year’s third place finishers Plainview proved they are still big time contenders for the state titles in their classes. Madison ran away with the tourney with a solid showing while Pender took second and Plainview third. The Bears finished ninth teamwise out of the 16-team tournament.

Hartington girl has a real passion for hunting

HARTINGTON — Tessa Knutson hadn’t celebrated her thirteenth birthday yet when she shot her first elk this fall.

Tessa loves to hunt and is already thinking ahead to future hunting trips.

“I would like to get a bear or maybe a mountain lion,” Tessa said.

Tessa said she learned her hunting skills from her dad.

LCC represented by three at State Cross Country Meet

KEARNEY — In the climax of the season for cross country runners, the Kearney Country Club set the stage for the State Cross Country Meet Friday. Over 800 harriers from across the state were on hand to run in eight different races.

Laurel-Concord/Coleridge had three runners qualify for the state race, Aaron Haahr, Sadie Petersen, and Sammie Camenzind. In spite of a stiff northwest breeze, temperatures crept into the 60s and created pristine conditions for the trio.

Petersen, LCC boys nab NENAC titles

NELIGH — All year long, extracurricular activities in the Northeast Nebraska Activities Conference will have a strange, bittersweet flavor as each season concludes. With the move by Crofton to Mid-States starting in the 2012-2013 season, and other schools, including Laurel-Concord/Coleridge, finding homes in other conferences in 2013-2014, the NENAC is on its farewell tour. With the prospect of being the last NENAC Champion, all of its members have been working extra hard to claim one last title in the soon-to-be extinct conference.

Gallup earns 10th place at Crofton Invitational

CROFTON — The Bloomfield/Wausa cross country squad competed last Friday at the Crofton Invitational held at Lakeview Golf Course.

Breanna Gallup was the lone medalist in varsity competition as she medaled in 10th place (16:51.33), Lily Nagengast also competed in the varsity girls race where she placed 35th (20:21.91).

Runners compete at Wayne, Hartington invitationals

WAYNE — Amid temperatures near 100 degrees, the Randolph cross country team competed well at the Wayne Cross Country Invite at the Wayne Country Club on Sept. 11.

The team set several personal best times on the day, despite the tough competition, gusty winds, and high temperatures. The competitors met new competition from Norfolk Catholic, Wayne, Pierce, Wisner-Pilger, Winside, Laurel-Concord/Coleridge, and Winnebago.

Cross country team fares well at area meets

HARTINGTON – In the second race of the year for the Laurel-Concord/Coleridge Cross Country team, the Bears headed north to the Hartington Invitational Sept. 6. The Bears were down a runner as senior Sammie Camenzind was unable to run after suffering severe blisters in the opening race at Indian Trails Country Club near Beemer.

Veteran Cross Country team is set for new season

HARTINGTON — Hartington cross country coaches Laura Noecker and Mandy Hochstein are expecting big things from this year’s team.

This year’s squad features three returning letterwinners, including two-time state qualifier Rachel Loecker.

Senior Lindsay Dunn and sophomore Tanner Fischer also return after earning letters for the Hartington team last year.

Sharp shooters put on quite an exhibition

LAUREL — Aaron Gould takes a deep breath before hoisting the clay targets into the air. Several shots ring out rapidly and smoke spreads through the air as he completes his task.
Aaron has managed to shatter all seven of the clays before they hit the ground. The crowd erupts with applause as a smile breaks across Aaron’s face.
The Gould Brothers — Aaron and Steve — Exhibition Shooters performed their skills at a birthday party for their cousin, Dan Gould, at his Dixon area home last week.
“I enjoyed the show very much,” Dan Gould said. “It was fun to watch the reactions people had.”

Dolphins finish season strong, take first at conference meet

Blair — The Hartington Dolphins finished their season with a strong showing at the conference meet Saturday in Blair.
Competing with 66 swimmers against West Point, Wayne, Wisner, Fremont, Blair, Tekamah, North Bend and Dodge, the Dolphins earned 597 points. Blair took second place with 274 points. West Point took third with 251 points.
Swimming his last swim meet for the Dolphins was  18 year old, Seth Howell. Howell has competed since the Dolphins “re-emerged” three years ago and has been a top competitor for the Dolphins each year. He will be missed greatly by the Dolphins next year.
