Wynot track athletes head to Omaha

HARTINGTON—The Wynot Blue Devils’ boys’ and girls’ track teams competed last Thursday at the District D-3 Track Meet.

With the top two finishers in each event qualifying for this weekend’s NSAA State Track Meet and a few other wild cards qualifying based on their time, the girls’ team will be represented at State in three individual events by two athletes.

Wynot’s Wieseler, Schulte both earn First Team All State

HARTINGTON —  After leading the Wynot girls’ basketball team to its third consecutive Class D-2 state championship, junior Maggie Schulte was named to the NSAA All-State team.

This is the third year in a row the Wynot junior has earned the prestigious honor.

Schulte averaged 13.6 points per game and finished in double figures for scoring in 25 of 29 contests. Her season high came in a regular season meeting with Osmond where she scored 26 points.

Maggie Schulte reaches a scoring milestone at State

WYNOT —  One thousand career points is a tall order for a high school basketball player, and one that most never achieve.

Wynot’s Maggie Schulte did it with one game to spare in just her junior season.

En route to the school’s third-consecutive NSAA Girl’s State Title, and fourth since 2005 under the guidance of 15th-year Head Coach Steve Weiseler, Schulte surpassed her 1,000th career point in a 43-40 win over Holy Family in the State Semifinal.

LINCOLN — The Wynot Blue Devils put their name in the record books Saturday.

The Wynot boys earned their first state basketball championship on Saturday morning at the Devaney Center when they pulled out a gutsy 57-56 win in double overtime.

After trailing by as much as seven points in the first half the Blue Devils would outscore the Knights 16-11 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Both teams scored five points in the first overtime but in the second overtime Wynot would outscore Spalding 6-5 to earn the big win.

Wynot boys top Wausa for Dist. crown

HARTINGTON — The  Wynot Blue Devils got revenge Tuesday for a regular season loss to the Wausa Vikings in the District finals played at Cedar Catholic.

Wynot used a big 22-2 third-quarter scoring burst to break open a tight ball game and then rolled to the 48-30 win.

The Blue Devils got to cut the nets and earned a trip to Lincoln as the District champs. Wausa will also be going to the big dance as a wild card qualifier. Check out the preview page inside this week’s Cedar County News for information on the Class D2 State Tournament.

Wynot Lady Devils set state tourney record in first-round win

LINCOLN — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils showed they were serious about trying to get a three-peat in the girls state tournament Thursday night.

Wynot came out firing against the Giltner Lady Hornets and rolled to an 80-53 win in their first round game at Lincoln East High School.

The 80-point effort was a new state record in girls D-2 state tournament play. The Lady Blue Devils hit 10 three-pointers from six different players and made 20-25 freethrows in a dominating performance.

Wynot girls repeat as State Champions

LINCOLN — It’s tough to repeat as State Champions. It’s even tougher to win three State titles in a row.

Despite the long odds, the Wynot Lady Blue Devils earned their third straight Class D2 State title here Saturday.

Wynot and the Osmond Lady Tigers split in their other two games this year with Wynot winning the regular season game and Osmond taking the District title game. So they met to decide the rubber match but this time it was on a bigger stage — the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.

Wynot boys avenge loss to Bancroft to win SubDistrict title

HARTINGTON — The Wynot Blue Devils got revenge for an earlier season loss by defeating the Bancroft-Rosalie Panthers in their SubDistrict finals in a game delayed by the snow storm until Saturday night.

Both teams were bombing away from three point land as each team hit nine times from behind the arch.

The difference in the game came at the free throw line as Wynot got their more often and held a 10-3 advantage from the charity stripe and the Blue Devils took the 57-52 win to moved on to battle the Wausa Vikings for the district championship and a trip to state.

Wynot girls are upset by Osmond Tigers

HARTINGTON — The Osmond Lady Tigers upset the Wynot Lady Blue Devils in their district finals match up Thursday night.

The Lady Blue Devils were very lethargic in the first quarter and fell behind 17-4.

Wynot still in the hunt for another state title

HARTINGTON —  The Wynot girls basketball team is one step closer to returning to the State girls basketball tournament to defend their Class D2 state title.

Wynot earned the SubDistrict title last week by whipping Bancroft-Rosalie 62-36. The Lady Devils will now take on Osmond Friday night for the District title and an automatic berth into the State Tourney.
