HARTINGTON – The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans did something here Thursday that very few teams have been able to do this season.
Cedar defeated West Point Guardian Angels in five sets. It was West Point’s fourth loss of the season, losing only to undefeated Lutheran High NE and Class C1 powerhouses Wayne and Arlington.
Cedar lost an up-and-down first set 25-21.
The Lady Trojans came out fired up for the second set, using a pair of Lexi Steffen kills and solid net play from Karly Noecker to build a 6-1 early lead.
A West Point ace serve and a Cedar error cut the lead to 6-3. A Lexi Steffen tip over and a solid block from the junior stand-out helped the Lady Trojans to a 9-3 advantage. The Lady Jays came back strong with a five-point run to climb back into the match. Katelyn Dickes blasted two kills and an ace block over the net to help Cedar put together a 7-2 run to once again take control with a 16-10 lead.
The Lady Jays again climbed back into the match, cutting Cedar’s lead to 20-19, then took a 22-21 lead before Lexi Steffen’s powerful kill knotted the game at 22-22.
A Katelyn Dickes block, a West Point error and aKarly Noecker slam gave Cedar the 25-23 win.
In the third set, the two squads traded points evenly until the Jays took a 9-7 lead on a Hailey Steuter kill. West Point stretched its lead to four with a Steuter ace serve. A 7-1 Cedar run put the Lady Trojans ahead 17-16. Three stellar Katelyn Dickes plays, one on defense and two on offense, stretched Cedar’s lead to 20-17. The two teams again traded points until Cedar took a 24-22 lead with a big McKae Pinkelman slam. Cedar wasn’t able to seal the deal, though as West Point put together a 4-0 run to steal the 26-24 win.
The two teams traded points evenly in the fourth set until Siera Becker slammed down back to back kills to give the Big Red a 13-10 lead. That was the start of an 11-7 Cedar run to give the Lady Trojans a 23-18 advantage. A Blue Jay error and a McKae Pinkelman kill gave Cedar the 25-21 win.
The two squads again traded points evenly in the final frsme before a McKae Pinkelman kill started a 4-0 run for Cedar. The Jays pulled to within three points, 12-9, before an error and two Lexi Steffen kills ended the game.
Cedar, 15-6, will now take a two-week hiatus before hosting O’Neill St. Marys on Oct. 11.
