HARTINGTON — The Wynot Blue Devils and Wausa Vikings locked in a real dog fight for the championship of the D2-5 SubDistrict Thursday at Cedar Catholic’s gym.
This one took an extra period to decide the outcome as the Blue Devils would outscore the Vikings 5-0 in the overtime and earn the 45-40 win.

WAUSA – Cedar Catholic defeated Crofton 55-43 Thursday for the SubDistrict C2-9 title.
In Cedar’s first game of the tourney, the Trojans defeated Plainview 80-39.
The Trojans got their offense started Thursday thanks to a Trevor Hamilton inside shot and a Zach Steffen basket. Cedar and Crofton then traded baskets evenly for most of the first frame until the Trojans put together a 6-1 run to close out the first frame.

HARTINGTON — The Lady Vikes ended their season with a 64-29 loss to the state ranked Wynot Lady Blue Devils last week in first-round action of the SubDistricts.

Wynot jumped out to an early lead in the first frame in which the Lady Vikes could not recover from.

“We did come out and have a good night shooting the ball in the second half,” Coach Rusty Fuller said.  ”Abbi Hegge played very aggressive on the offensive side of the ball.”

Plainview’s perimeter shooting ends Bears’ season

Posted by rob On February - 22 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

WAUSA — For some, Monday’s boys subdistrict contest could not get over fast enough and bring an end to a disappointing season. For others, the game clock moved too quickly, as it meant the end of another basketball season.

Regardless, the Laurel-Concord/Coleridge Boys’ basketball team left it all out on the Wausa hardcourt Monday night. Although they eventually lost 63-49, the Bears’ put forth a solid effort. The fans gave them a strong final appreciation through the game, even though the season had gone anything but as planned.

Lady Bears’ season ends with tough loss to Crofton

Posted by rob On February - 22 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

WAUSA — What began as a very close game through the first half slowly morphed into a difficult season-ending loss for the Laurel-Concord/Coleridge Girls’ basketball team. Last Thursday, the Lady Bears faced the Crofton Lady Warriors in the Class C2-9 Subdistrict Final and lost 47-33.

LCC knew they would have an uphill battle against Crofton. Crofton was rated #8 in Class C2 in the Feb. 13, Lincoln Journal Star poll.

Crofton had only lost four games through their season. Top-rated Class C1 Boone Central, Class C2 and #2 rated Lutheran High NE, and most recently Class C1 and #3 rated Norfolk Catholic all posted wins against the Lady Warriors.

The fourth loss came at the hands of the Lady Bears. LCC got an early season win against the Lady Warriors. However, they say it is harder to beat a team multiple times in the same season.

Laurel girls edge Cedar once again

Posted by rob On February - 22 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

WAUSA — The third and final act in the 2011-12 saga between Laurel-Concord/Coleridge and Cedar Catholic was just as riveting as the first two installments.

Even though it was Valentine’s Day, there was little love between the Lady Bears and the Lady Trojans as LCC held on to win 45-44.

“Going into this game I thought we were well prepared,” Cedar Catholic Coach Jason Folkers said.  “The girls learned a new offense in a couple of days and I felt we executed it well.”

As with the other games of the season series between these two teams, neither could get a definitive upper hand and maintain a lead.

Wynot Blue Devils top Dodge in Top 5 battle

Posted by rob On February - 22 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

WYNOT — Two of the top boys teams in the D-2 rankings met here Friday night in the regular season finale.

The Blue Devils used a 20-2 second quarter run to build a halftime lead that they held onto in the second half and downed the Dodge Pirates by a final score of 47-32. Other than the Blue Devils breakout second quarter both teams pounded away on each other on the defensive end for most of the game before the Blue Devils got this one under control.
