Hartington Dolphins open season with strong showing

Wayne — The Hartington Dolphins opened their season with a record number of swimmers competing and a record high number of points scored.
Hartington easily won the meet. Swimming at Wayne against West Point, Wisner and Wayne, the Dolphins compiled 961 points and took 70 swimmers to compete at the meet. A total of 77 swimmers are competing this season for the Hartington Dolphins.
Their next competion will be  June 30 in Wisner.

HARTINGTON — Hartington’s Carter Thoene takes a cut at the ball during a Pony League game here against Norfolk Wednesday. Casey Lammers makes a defensive play on a ball. Tanner Keiser slides safely into home. The 18-2 victory went to Norfolk.

Hartington 12s compete against area foes

HARTINGTON — The Hartington 12-and-under softball team opened the season with a 2-1 record, falling 9-8 to Verdigre, but beating both Wausa and Randolph.
Liby Lange took the mound for Hartington against Verdigre. Lange started out strong, striking out the first batter, but the Lady Hawks were able to plate two in the frame.

Softball teams take on Osmond, Randolph

HARTINGTON — The Hartingon 14 and under team earned a split during recent action.
On June 19, Hartington dropped a 12-11 decision to Osmond.
Kayla Loberg went 2-3 to pace the team at the plate.
Jillian Jueden  and Taylor Lammers fared well with 1-2 performances. Lammers’s hit was a triple.
Hartington took on Randolph on June 21, winning 10-9.

City watches Stefanec pursue Olympic dreams

OMAHA — The town of Hartington kept a close eye on the Olympic Swim Trials here Tuesday.
Anne Stefanec, the granddaughter of Anne Wortmann and the late Rudy Wortmann, Hartington, and the neice and cousin of several others here, competed on the national stage Tuesday for a shot at making next month’s London Olympics.
The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for the Olympic team.
She competed in the eighth of 17 heats Tuesday morning at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, finishing in fifth-place with a time of 1:04.5.

Bears to compete in KC tourney this Friday

LAUREL — Members of the Laurel-Concord/Coleridge football team leave June 21 to  play in a seven-on-seven tournament Friday, June 22 in Kansas City.
The regional tournament will feature four teams. Another Nebraska squad, South Sioux City will also compete at the event.
The competition will start at 8 a.m. June 22 at Rockhurst High School. It features a round-robin format with 20-minute games.
After the round-robin tournament, the teams are then ranked and seeded for a playoff. The winner will represent the Kansas City Chiefs at a tournament in Indianapolis later this year.

County athletes help lead volleyball All Stars

NORFOLK —  A trio of Cedar County athletes helped lead the Light All Stars to a big volleyball victory here last week.
The Light All Star team recorded a 25-17, 21-25, 25-15, 22-25, 18-16 win over the Dark All Stars at the 15th annual Northeast Nebraska All-Star Volleyball Classic at Northeast Community College Friday night,
The winning team was coached by Laurel-Concord/Coleridge’s Patti Cunningham.
Shuraya Frauendorfer, Humphrey, led the Light Team. She had 10 kills and two blocks to pick up her team’s MVP award.

Hartington 14s split pair of games with Cty foes

RANDOLPH —  The Hartington 14-and-under girls’ softball team earned a 16-6 win over Randolph June 12.
Lauren Steffen and Lauren Bengston paced the Hartington offense as both girls went 2-4 at the plate.
Brandi Wiebelhaus also had a stellar outing on the mound to earn the win.
June 14, Wynot traveled to Hartington with the visitors from the north earning a lopsided 18-3 win.
Kayla Loberg, Sophie Noecker, Taylor Lammers, Lauren  Bengston, and Lauren Steffen all had hits in the game, but Hartington couldn’t bring them around to score.
Camie Stratman suffered the loss on the mound for Hartington.

American Legion teams fall to Wayne

HARTINGTON — Wayne earned a sweep of the action here last Thursday, defeating both the Hartington American Legion Juniors and Seniors.
The Wayne Junior Legion team came from behind to earn the 6-3 decision.
Wayne’s Curtis Moeller was the winning pitcher, going six innings, surrendering three runs on nine hits while striking out five.
