Cedar boys claim Crofton title
WAYNE — The Cedar Catholic boys’ track team started the new season off on a high note here last week
The Cedar boys took runner-up honors to Columbus Scotus April 7.
The Trojans walked away from the meet with four gold medals.
Jonathon Becker took top honors in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Neil Kramer also earned gold in the high jump, while Kyle Kramer won the triple jump.
Cedar Catholic Coach Chad Cattau was happy with his team’s opening season effort.
“I was extremely pleased with the overall effort and team attitude we performed with. We have a lot of areas where we need to improve, but I believe with more time spent on the track in practice we will continue to make strides,” Cattau said. “I saw a lot of leadership at the meet, and that was exciting to see.”
Becker easily out-distanced runner-up Matt Mimick of David City Aquinas to win the 300-meter hurdles in 42.40. Neil Kramer and Chad Koch also placed in the hurdles. Kramer earned bronze with a run of :44;30, while Koch finished right behind him with a time of :44.50.
Becker again topped the field in the 110-meter hurdles, leading three Cedar athletes to the line. Neil Kramer finished the race with a bronze, while Chad Koch earend a sixth-place finish.
Cattau said the team‘s depth really showed Tuesday.
“I thought we had very good balance and scored in a variety of events. We don’t seem to be heavy in the field events like we have been in the past,” he said, adding that there is still plenty of room for improvement, “I do feel we left a lot of points on the track though and we need some people to step up their performances so we can continue to get better.”
The Cedar girls picked up five medals on the day.
“We had a lot of girls really perform well for the first meet of the year,” Coach Cattau said. “I believe this group of girls, although small in numbers, can score a lot of points if they focus on getting better each day of practice. We’re going to have to work hard for every point we score and everyone must step up their roles in order to perform at the highest level. I believe we will see a great improvement over the course of the next couple of weeks if we are able to get on the track on a daily basis for practice.”
