Laurel-Concord/Coleridge Bears send nine to state track
WISNER — Last Thursday, the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams traveled to Wisner-Pilger High School to participate in the Class C-5 District Meet.
The Lady Bears had a solid day even though they were in a tough district. The girls managed to claim the Silver Medal with 103 team points behind Hartington Cedar Catholic’s 118. As a team, the boys had a rough day and were only able to score 44 team points, placing eighth.
Even though the team results were not as spectacular as recent meets, the Lady Bears and Bears were able to secure spots for nine athletes in 10 different events.
Senior Katie Jacobsen terrorized the competition with her endurance and claimed three individual gold medals. In the 1600 Meter Run, her 5:38.20 was 12 seconds better than the silver medalist. Her second gold of the day came in the 800 Meter Run, as she outpaced everyone with a 2:27.00.
Jacobsen and fellow senior Ashley Lunz went one-two in the 400 Meter Dash with times of 59.60 and 1:02.70. The dynamic duo was also a part of the 1600 Meter Relay with sophomore Sami Camenzind and freshman Kelsey Dietrich, who claimed gold with a time of 4:16.90.
Lunz got another individual gold in the 200 Meter Dash as she ran a 26.70 sprint.
Senior Kayla Wiese tied with Hartington’s Becca Heikes in the Pole Vault. Both girls maxed out at 10’0”. Junior Erika Hochstein earned a trip to Burke High with a silver medal in High Jump at 4’-10”.
Junior Amy Pritchard qualified for the State Track Meet in both the Long and Triple Jumps via jumps earlier in the season. To rest her legs, Coach Terry Beair had Pritchard take one jump in each event at Districts. Pritchard was able to set a new District Meet Record as she won the Triple Jump with a 35’-11”.
On the boys’ side, senior Trevor Hefner claimed silver and a shot at State in the Shot Put with a 46’11” heave.
Junior teammate Mitch Heikes ran well in both the 100 and 200 Meter Dashes, but was only able to punch his ticket to Omaha in one event. Heikes claimed gold with a 11.40 second 100 Meter Dash time.
