State-rated Pender hands Cards loss
PENDER — State-rated Pender hung a 62-20 setback on the Randolph Cardinals during football action here Friday.
Randolph got off to a good start againt the Pendragons, but couldn’t contain their speedy offense in the second frame.
Pender’s Zack Johnson broke free of the Randolph defense as he sprinted to the goal line on a 51-yard TD run to put the first points of the game on the board on the first play from scrimmage.
Randolph countered with a big play of its own.
Dylan Loberg returned the ensuing kick off 71 yards for a touchdown to knot the score at 6-6.
Levi Lackas then put the visitors in front, 8-6, when he crossed the goal line on the two-point conversion.
With just over five minutes left in the first frame, Randolph hit paydirt again when Nolan Nordhues hit Lackas in the endzone on a nine-yard TD pass.
The home team countered with a 13-yard Ben Burmeister TD run with just under two minutes left in the quarter. The extra point attempt was no good, giving the Cards the 14-12 lead at the halftime break.
The wheels came off of the Cardinal machine in the second frame.
Pender put up 28 points in the frame, scoring every time they touched the ball.
The Cards managed to find the endzone one more time, too, scoring on a 33-yard TD pass from Nolan Nordhues to Grant Anderson, cutting the deficit to 40-20.
Coach Mark Lech said the Cards looked good early, but made too many mistakes against a very good team.
“We committed too many penalties and made too many mistakes in the punting game to gain a victory against the Pendragons,” Coach Mark Lech said.
The team will have to correct these mistakes in order to get another victory, he said.
“The challenge for the upcoming week will be to shore up the defense and the missed tackles and assignments,” he said.
The Cardinals will once again be on the road Friday when they travel to Emerson to take onthe Emerson-Hubbard Pirates.
“We will have to play better to beat Emerson-Hubbard,” Coach Lech said.
