Laurel-Concord/Coleridge comes up short against Falcons

Posted by rob On January - 11 - 2012

TILDEN — After a tough game against the state-rated Cedar Trojans on Jan. 5, the Laurel-Concord/Coleridge Boys basketball team hoped to get a win against the Elkhorn Valley Falcons on Jan. 6.
The contest was very back and forth throughout most of the game, but Elkhorn Valley held off the Bears’ offense late and won 52-60.

“The game turned into a game of scoring runs. We would make one and they would make one,” said head coach Shannon Benson, “They were the ones who were able to make the last one.”
After the first quarter, the score was tied at 18. By the end of the first half, Elkhorn Valley had a one-point lead.
In the third frame, Elkhorn Valley stretched their lead from one to two. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Bears failed to make an offensive run. Elkhorn Valley out scored LCC 9-15 to finish eight points ahead.
“The guys never quit playing and it was a very good game to watch,” said Benson, “We just had a few too many empty possessions and we couldn’t recover from it.”
Mitch Heikes and Zach Shear were the dynamic offensive duo for the Bears, as each scored 16 points. Shear and Brady Papenhausen dominated the boards throughout the game grabbing six and eight, respectively.
LCC had to face another tough foe on Tuesday night. They traveled to Wayne to face the state-rated Blue Devils. Final stats and scores were not available at press time.
Friday, the Bears will entertain local fans while hosting the Creighton Bulldogs. The JV games begin at 4 p.m. and continue through the evening. The Laurel-Concord FFA Chapter will be supplementing the concessions stand as they host their annual Soup Supper. They will begin serving chili and chicken noodle soup at 5 p.m.
