Cedar golf team finishes 6th at State Meet
KEARNEY — The Cedar Catholic golf team finished in the Top 10 at State, while Kyle Klug ended his high school golf career with a third-place finish at the Class C State meet.
The team finish marks the 12th time in the last 17 years that Cedar has finished the State meet in the Top 15. This is the ninth time in the last 10 State Trips that the Trojans finished in the Top 10 at State.
Klug fired a 75 on the first day and closed out with a 76 for a 150 two-day total.
Eric Kruse fired an 82 on the first day and finished out with an 87 for a 169.
Klug’s finish marks the second-best performance in school history.
Only Greg Heimes fared better. He earned runner-up honors in 1995, the year Cedar won its first Golf State Championship.
Coach Mike Johnson was very happy to see the team perform so well.
“I was real pleased with how the kids played down in Kearney. Even though we fell short of our goal of being in the Top five as a team, we played some pretty good golf over the two days in Kearney,” Johnson said.
The team had to face some real adversity at the State meet.
On Tuesday, they played in the strongest winds they had seen all year.
“The kids did a good job of battling against the elements all day long,” Johnson said.
Cedar had a lot of trouble with one hole in particular Tuesday.
“As a team, we struggled on number 14, which is a long par 5 that played into the wind on Tuesday,” Johnson said.
The team looked solid on Wednesday, Cedar’s veteran coach said.
“On Wednesday, I felt we played quite a bit better for the majority of the round than we played on Tuesday,” he said.
Klug, a four-year varsity player, ended his high school career in great form, Johnson said.
“Kyle had a great tournament. He was real steady and made a lot of clutch shots over the two days,” Johnson said. “Going out with a third -place medal is a great end to his high school golf career.”
Klug missed tying the 36-hole school record by one shot, which is held by Jarryd Schieffer and Jon Hoesing.
Kruse also had a solid finish to his career, Coach Johnson said.
“Eric played really well on Tuesday, and was only three or four shots out of 15th place going into Wednesday,” Johnson said. “Unfortunately, he had a three-hole stretch where he took a couple of double bogies.”
Coach Johnson said Dalton Lammers had one bad hole on Tuesday, and did a good job of rebounding from that and played very well for two days.
Grant Howell also had one bad hole on Tuesday and then another on Wednesday, which kept him from shooting lower for the tournament, Johnson said.
Seth Howell played very solid golf except for one bad hole on his first nine on Tuesday.
“He did a great job of not letting that hole bother him, and played really well on his second nine on Tuesday,” Johnson said.
All and all, it was a very successful season for Cedar, Johnson said.
Cedar won five tournaments and were runners-up in two tournaments this year.
The team will lose some key veterans this year.
“We are really going to miss Kyle, Eric and Seth next year. Kyle played varsity in every meet over the last four years. Eric and Seth both played varsity the last two seasons,” Johnson said.
